The Java language is normally the first language that any programmer learns. Since many different programmers are interested in developing their own game, many programmers will use the Java language to create a simple one. There are many different Java game development tools. For example, a programmer could use Java 3D, Swing, AWT, LWJGL, Slick, and JGame for game development.

Java 3D, Swing, AWT

Java 3D, Swing, and AWT are game libraries that are not designed for game development. However, they do have a slight advantage. This advantage is the fact that Java 3D, Swing, and AWT are already installed on the Java system automatically. This means that the new programmer does not need to deal with specific configurations. This makes it easier for the programmer to use Java and these game development tools to make easy games. However, Java 3D, Swing, and AWT do have their own disadvantages. For example, these programming tools are specifically designed for making Graphical User Interfaces. Java 3D, Swing, and AWT are not the best tools for creating Java based games. This is mainly because the developer needs to focus on synchronizing audio and video.

The Lightweight Java Game Library

The Lightweight Java Game Library, or LWJGL, is an extremely powerful Java game engine. The Lightweight Java Game Library gives Java game developers the chance to access the Open AL audio library and the Open GL graphics library. The LWJGL also provides specific functions that allow the developers the ability to access and create game pads and joysticks. The engine is normally used in both games made for hobbies and commercial ones. As long as someone understands the Java programming language, the LWJGL can be of some use.

Slick

The Slick Java game development tool is an easy to use tool that many different programmers can understand. The Slick gaming interface is built on top of the LWJGL interface. Since the open AL audio library and the open GL graphics library can get a little complicated, Slick replaces the open AL and open GL with simple method calls. In addition, the Slick Java based game development tool features built in game skeletons. The built in game skeletons are designed to be useful for game designers who need to handle the options screen and the main menu for a Java based video game. However, the negative aspect to the Slick Java game development tool is the fact that Slick only supports 2D graphics. This can get frustrating when a game designer wants to create one that features high quality 3D graphics.

JGame

Instead of using the LWJGL, the JGame uses the AWT, Swing, and Java Open GL libraries. In fact, the JGame application is built on top of these libraries. The JGame Java tool is used to make many different games. In fact, JGame can be used to create Web browser video, desktop video, and even cell phone games. However, the cell phone or computer needs to have Java installed. JGame also supports simple methods like DrawImage and PlayAudio.

The recent release of Java Web Services Developers Pack (Java WSDP) version 1.0 from Sun Microsystems gives Java developers the opportunity to easily access all-in-one download that helps in the Java development of web services. This Java development pack possesses all the Java APIs for XML that is also available in the Java XML Pack as well as the Apache Tomcat server and other components that are essential for the development and testing of Java development projects.

The Java Web Services Development Pack allows Java developers to successfully implement web services standards through an easy to understand installation package. This package, which can be used for Java development web service consists of a grouping of production-ready implementations and various components that is used only for testing purposes. Therefore this particular pack is not ideal for java development where deploying production applications are required. It is primarily meant to give Java developers an opportunity to develop and test web services. The various components that Java developers can find within the Java WSDP are:

This Java development web service pack offers JAXP, which is a pluggable API that allows any vendor’s implementation of the W3C’s referred XML APIs.
Another feature that it offers Java developers is JAXM, which is designed to allow applications to send as well as receive document oriented XML messages through the usage of pure Java API. The main purpose is to provide Java developers with a foundation for standard based messaging protocols that are primarily founded on the SOAP messaging protocol.
Another package that it offers as part of the Java development for web services is SAAJ that allows Java developers to develop messages that conform to the SOAP 1.1 specifications, which also includes different SOAP attachments.
JAX RPC is the Java API meant to support SOAP 1.1 XML based RPC calls. The basic JAX-RPC file consists of a functional JAX-RPC client that invokes web services and a reference implementation for the JAX-RPC server.

3 Easy Steps to install Java on Linux

Java is a programming language and computing platform first released by Sun Microsystems in 1995. It is the underlying technology that powers state-of-the-art programs including utilities, games, and business applications. Java runs on more than 850 million personal computers worldwide, and on billions of devices worldwide, including mobile and TV devices.

There are lots of applications and websites that won’t work unless you have Java installed, and more are created every day. Java is fast, secure, and reliable. From laptops to datacenters, game consoles to scientific supercomputers, cell phones to the Internet, Java is everywhere!

So,i’m going to explain you step by step installtion of java on linux.

Step 1:
Download the Latest Version of java from http://java.com
Select the OS you would like to download for(window,linux,solaris).
There are two types of files to download.

1.Self extracting binary file.
This file can be used to install Java in a location chosen by the user and can be installed by anyone (not only root users). As long as you are not root user, it cannot displace the system version of the Java platform suppled by Linux.

2.RPM Package
Linux RPM (Redhat Package Manager) uses RPM to install Java. In order to use this method, you need to have RPM available on your system. Otherwise use the other option.

In this case we will download self extracting binary file.
I m using Java 6 update 13.

Step2.
Install as root for system wide java or if you want it just for yourself,extract the package in ~/bin/java or your home location.

a.Change the file permission.
chmod a+x jdk-6u13-linux-i586.bin

b.Change to directory where you want to install
cd /usr/java/

c.Run the file.
./jdk-6u13-linux-i586.bin

Accept the license agreement.

Java gets installed in the directory
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_13

Step 3.
Now, if you want to be able to execute this version of Java interpretor or compiler from any directory on your GNU/Linux system you will have to create a few symbolic links:

# ln -s /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_13/bin/java /usr/bin/java
# ln -s /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_13/bin/javac /usr/bin/javac

To make Java available to all users, add it to the default PATH settings by editing /etc/profile and adding:

PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_13/bin

JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_13

export $PATH $JAVA_HOME

Firefox or Mozilla

Create a symbolic link to the libjavaplugin.so file in the browser plugins directory

Go to the plugins sub-directory under the Firefox installation directory
cd /plugins
Create the symbolic link
ln -s /plugin/i386/
ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

eg.
Go to mozilla folder

cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Create a symbolic link

ln -s /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_13/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji_so
