How to compare strings of characters in Java?

Question by Ashley Johnson: How to compare strings of characters in Java?
I am new at Java and at a lost, I need to compare two strings of characters in java to find which one comes first in the alphabet and don’t know where to start. Any suggestions where I can start? Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thank you so much.
Also can you have more than one compareTo in a program? I need it for two methods but the first methods results will override the second even if I do not initiate the first method.

Try str.compareTo().

I don’t think == works, as that compares the object reference, not the string contents.

Java is the most popular programming language for developing application for the web, mobile, enterprises and also the desktop. The Java platform was originally developed by Sun Microsystems and now Sun certification is fully integrated with Oracle Certification program. These Oracle Java Certifications (formerly Sun Certifications) continue to play an important role in development of Java technology. 

However, several non-Oracle / Sun tools, libraries and application frameworks are also used to develop a Java application. Thus there is no single vendor for all Java technologies, though Oracle Java courses (formerly Sun Java courses) and certifications are by far the most popular.

The Oracle Certified Programmer for Java Platform, Standard Edition 6 certification exam is for programmers experienced in using the Java programming language. Achieving this certification provides clear evidence that the programmer understands the basic syntax and structure of the Java programming language and can create Java technology applications that run on server and desktop systems using Java SE 6. OCA-JAVA is not a pre-requisite for this exam. 

In OCP-JP 6 several new API classes/interfaces have been added: java.io.Console, java.util.NavigableSet, java.util.NavigableMap. Explicit garbage collector calls i.e. System.gc() will no longer be tested, but candidate will still be expected to understand garbage collection and the finalize() method. Also, the following topics will be tested in greater depth: exception handling, collections, assertions, threads, and flow control.

It is now much simpler for Java developers to create Open Source programs based on various Java versions and as well as fulfill the Sun Microsystems compatibility needs, however this is only for those that are directly involved in Sun Microsystems open source projects.

For those involved in the Java software offered by Sun open-source, can now have access to their Compatibility Kit related to Java development technology. Java developers will find this kit handy as it lets you test the compatibility of your projects with reference to Java specifications.

If the project passes these compatibility tests then you are allowed to use none other but the official Java logos and it’s all for free. Earlier only those Java developers who had Java licences were authorised to use this kit and therefore it applied only to larger players and certain non-profit groups. But now that it’s let out for use by every programmer, there’s lots of improvements in-store and we’ll be witnessing an avalanche of great projects being released with each of them displaying the official Java logo.

What is the Java platform all about?

This platform is one of the most important platforms available to Java developers, it boasts of a wide array of software that allow programs written in Java codes to run on almost every computer without the need of specific alterations and translations. There is an inbuilt program namely Java virtual Machine that is backed up by exquisite libraries of already written codes, these help translate the programs so that they can easily run on any computer without any compatibility problems.

Since this program is now available to every Java developer, loads of open-source programmers will come forward and partake in various projects taken up by Sun’s own open-source Java Projects, i.e. OpenJDK.

Not every one of us is happy with the happenings around Sun’s Java Work:

It’s never possible to satisfy and cater to the needs of each and every individual when it comes to open-source projects and free software. Many groups and individuals will have problems related to incompatible licences and various other technical problems. Sun is trying its best to resolve these problems but the extent is so huge that it will take plenty of time and work to overcome these issues.

Java developers are given the right to tweak software so as to create whole new variations which need not be compatible with the original versions of the parent software. Sun has launched this open source program in the hope to get Java development team to diverge and move away from the original compatible and official Java programs and venture into new terrains.

But one important thing that programmers should know is that the compatibility kit as a whole isn’t an open source project and you aren’t allowed to tweak it as you may end up breaking the compatibility and then it won’t live up to its name anymore – compatibility kit!

Sun released it as open source software, however certain software licenced from third parties couldn’t follow suit as permission wasn’t granted by the private players. Nevertheless Sun has done its job in helping Java grow and prosper.
