Question by James: How to open Java applet in browser instead of new window on Macbook?
Hey
Sometimes when I use Java things online, instead of the java running in the browser window, it opens a new window called ‘Java Applet’. This has happened in both safari and google chrome. I was wondering how I could run it in the window. Java is enabled.

It is now much simpler for Java developers to create Open Source programs based on various Java versions and as well as fulfill the Sun Microsystems compatibility needs, however this is only for those that are directly involved in Sun Microsystems open source projects.
For those involved in the Java software offered by Sun open-source, can now have access to their Compatibility Kit related to Java development technology. Java developers will find this kit handy as it lets you test the compatibility of your projects with reference to Java specifications.
If the project passes these compatibility tests then you are allowed to use none other but the official Java logos and it’s all for free. Earlier only those Java developers who had Java licences were authorised to use this kit and therefore it applied only to larger players and certain non-profit groups. But now that it’s let out for use by every programmer, there’s lots of improvements in-store and we’ll be witnessing an avalanche of great projects being released with each of them displaying the official Java logo.

What is the Java platform all about?
This platform is one of the most important platforms available to Java developers, it boasts of a wide array of software that allow programs written in Java codes to run on almost every computer without the need of specific alterations and translations. There is an inbuilt program namely Java virtual Machine that is backed up by exquisite libraries of already written codes, these help translate the programs so that they can easily run on any computer without any compatibility problems.
Since this program is now available to every Java developer, loads of open-source programmers will come forward and partake in various projects taken up by Sun’s own open-source Java Projects, i.e. OpenJDK.
Not every one of us is happy with the happenings around Sun’s Java Work:
It’s never possible to satisfy and cater to the needs of each and every individual when it comes to open-source projects and free software. Many groups and individuals will have problems related to incompatible licences and various other technical problems. Sun is trying its best to resolve these problems but the extent is so huge that it will take plenty of time and work to overcome these issues.
Java developers are given the right to tweak software so as to create whole new variations which need not be compatible with the original versions of the parent software. Sun has launched this open source program in the hope to get Java development team to diverge and move away from the original compatible and official Java programs and venture into new terrains.
But one important thing that programmers should know is that the compatibility kit as a whole isn’t an open source project and you aren’t allowed to tweak it as you may end up breaking the compatibility and then it won’t live up to its name anymore – compatibility kit!
Sun released it as open source software, however certain software licenced from third parties couldn’t follow suit as permission wasn’t granted by the private players. Nevertheless Sun has done its job in helping Java grow and prosper.

Java Goes Open Source
In November of this year Sun Microsystems moved to “open source” status for Java, after a decade of maintaining proprietary status for the portable programming language. Specifically, Sun has placed Java into the public domain by putting it under GPL – an acronym for General Public License. What this means is that software programmers will have vastly increased freedom to develop programs based on Java and to develop modifications for the language itself.
It also puts Sun into the mainstream with other major platform developers such as Linux. While the company had put its Solaris operating system into open source status some time ago, Java is a highly distributed consumer platform and providing open source access to it gives the company a real boost in its standing among its peers. Perhaps more important, it will stimulate further development of consumer oriented Java-based programs. It is estimated that eight out of every ten cell phones have a Java application running on them.
A GPL use requires that any product developed under such licensure be returned to the “open source community” and remain, in effect accessible to all. Sun’s variation on this principle has an exception for applications built on the Java “Virtual Machine,” a platform that the company made available to software developers some time ago.
What this exception does is allow continued development of proprietary software written for Java, which keeps the language viable as a platform for revenue producing products. Prior to the switch to GPL status, Java program developers had to pay a licensing fee to Sun.
IBM has been after Sun to take Java to open source status for years. Their Works Projects has been a center for the development of open source products, primarily based on Linux. From their perspective, Sun’s decision to grant GPL status for Java is viewed as an opportunity to unite with Linux and provide a stronger platform to challenge Microsoft. The politics of software can be enormously complicated, especially when there’s an elephant like Microsoft in the house. But what Sun has accomplished with this move is provide an opportunity for programmers to zero in on Java products as potentially large revenue sources.
Unlike Linux, which was spun off of UNIX to provide an alternative to Windows, Java stands in a class of its own. While Linux has survived in the marketplace, it has never mounted a major challenge to Windows. Java’s unique qualities and the intellectual property that protects those qualities will now be an open book for programmers developing new applications.
It will also provide the opportunity to bundle Java products with Linux based software. Sun’s internal interest in this move is to stimulate more developers to use the language, in order to revive its own internal software business. Since taking a huge hit in their high-end server market, Sun has been struggling to find a new path and has increasingly looked to software as an opportunity.
Sun’s EVP for software summed up the value of the move for the company and its product. “People have been hesitant to distribute Java worldwide with Linux (distributions) because of (concerns over) license alignment,” Green said. “This is the last gate to ensure that Java will be distributed worldwide.”
